LEGAL AND BUSINESS ADVICE

Warwick Ryan has been appointed a partner at Hicksons Lawyers. Warwick is a leading specialist in employment and workplace relations law. He will continue in his role as our ASGA Legal Advisor, answering the questions of our members. For any advice, a member needs to first contact our Head Office so that contact can then be made with Warwick.

This week he was assisting an employer with details relating to the Long Service Leave of an employee.

Warwick has updated the new rates of pay for each of the Awards that apply to workers in our industry. They began from 1 July 2017 and are emailed from Head Office to members once they renew 2017 – 2018 membership.

GALA INDUSTRY DINNER - AWARDS EVENT 2018

As the year winds down, it also challenges us to lift our sights to the New Year and what it will bring. One event will be the Gala Industry Dinner/ASGA Awards event to be held on Thursday 13th September during the Sydney Trade Show. We promise to make it even more remarkable than the 2016 event when Vince Sorrenti entertained us with his unique humour.

Mark your diary now and check out your photo files on some great signage you have manufactured or installed since July 2016 or special projects you have in the pipeline up to May next year. Awards winning companies can draw so much attention to their expertise on their website or in Facebook.

RPL IN NSW FOR EXISTING WORKERS – PROGRAM FOR PART-SIGNAGE QUALIFICATION

We have been able to secure funding again so that employers/staff in our member companies can receive Certification which will enable them to commence and supervise apprentices. We did this program during this year and thirty-one existing workers from twelve companies secured this part-qualification. Paul Richards of TAFE Sydney will tailor training plans and the best set of units from the CERT III in Signage so that on job learning and assessment can simplify the process. Delivery in March/April 2018.

We need twenty starters! Contact ASGA Head Office - Michael Punch e: michael_punch@signs.org.au

FROM THE PRESIDENT

PROMOTING OUR INDUSTRY – ASSISTING TRAINING CENTRES

In recent months we have become increasingly more involved in promoting our industry to young school students who are hopefully our industry’s future. So many of them and their parents have no knowledge of our Sign & Graphics trade – they need and meet plumbers, carpenters and electricians in their homes but our tradepersons…..NO!

A five day Trade Readiness Course held in a Mt Druitt school in Sydney’s western suburbs opened the eyes of fifteen Year 11 students to our industry and its variety of work . TAFE Sydney staff planned and presented the elements of the Course. Now eight of the students are keen to be involved in a Pre-Apprenticeship five week programme in early next year

Other TAFEs across Australia want to buy in to this type of hands-on delivery of the work done in our businesses….some States know them as Trade Tasters. In Queensland we have made contact with companies who deliver the CERT III Qualification and we shall set up members’ meetings to hear from these companies. There is so much we are attempting to do in order to find the next wave of trade technicians.

I wish all our members and their families a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thank you for all your support and encouragement in 2017.
